Clear and checked
Put the beans, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and optional paprika in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until bubbling and slightly thickened.
Toast the bread until crisp and golden. Butter it immediately and place two slices on each warm plate.
Taste the beans before adding any salt; most brands are already well seasoned. Spoon them over the centre of the toast, leaving some edges crisp.
Add optional Cheddar and black pepper. Serve immediately before the toast softens completely.
